Holid – A’s List: What Every Nice Girl Deserves
The catalogues are piling up in your mailbox. You just thought twice before skipping Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on your iTunes. And from what you can make out amongst the scribbles in your planner, Black Friday is just around the corner.
Can you believe it, shopaholics? Gift guide season is here! Retail outlets and print publications are already sounding off on top gifts of the season. The glittering pages of strategically placed products are sure to bring fresh ideas to us all.
Amidst this mass-market push for of-the-minute items, I also keep a year-round list of timeless gifts I love. I may only receive one or two trinkets each season, but a thoughtful gift that will last a lifetime is far more economical than throwing $35 at a holiday trend. After all, you can only accumulate so many sequined shawls and snowflake pajama pants. Here are some of my favorite items amongst the 100+ I’ve added to my list:
Cashmere Travel Set: Whether flying home for the holidays or off to Europe for the semester, cashmere blankets and eye masks can make the crowded flight more bearable. I owe this tip to designer and world traveler Diane von Fustenberg, who advocates cashmere as an essential travel companion.
Tiffany & Co. Keys Collection: Branded as ‘a whispered romance’ and ‘a secret kept,” these pendants are the way to a woman’s heart. The elegant key shape has also made its way into less expensive venues such as Heavenly Treasures and Macy’s jewelry collection.
Vintage Posters: These glamorous collectibles evoke high fashion and iconic art from my favorite European era. Katie Gingrass Gallery in the third Ward is currently featuring a real deal vintage poster exhibit, but endless copies are available for less through eBay and online poster retailers.
Shoe of the Month Club: Did your heart melt as you read those words? This gift from J. Crew rewards good girls with a new pair of heels or ballet flats every month. This gift that keeps on giving rests at $1,800 but is divided into monthly payments of $150. It’s an excellent investment, considering most J. Crew footwear rests around $300 per pair. (P.S. Whoever buys my membership will automatically be dubbed my husband or maid of honor, whichever is more applicable.)
Hermes agenda: Practicality and luxury meet in the Hermes collection of leather planners and notebooks. The refillable covers make lifelong companions and are praised by Social Secretary Desiree Rogers. For look-alike luxury, try the legendary Moleskine collection used by artistic greats like Pablo Picasso and Ernest Hemingway.
I encourage you to start your own wish list for life. It’s the best way to learn your tastes, receive gifts you love and avoid a resurgence of Grandma’s homemade onesies.
You’re Beautiful,
Alise
“I find that men don’t respond too well to hints. You have to be more explicit. You walk by a store, point at something and say, ‘I want that.’”
